So, what makes the perfect ring stack?

At the end of the day, the real answer is easy: it’s whatever you like. Your body, your choice. But for me, it’s always been a little more romantic that that. It’s the mix of metals, the thoughtful design, and the craftsmanship.

My ring stack is a labor of love, my husband’s love with occasionally a little treat to myself. My ring stack has been slowly acquired over time. Six years, to be exact. One piece at a time: birthday, Mother’s Days, Christmas, Groundhogs day, and others. Honestly, if there’s a holiday coming up — I want jewelry, that’s the rule. And as the years have passed, the stack has quietly expanded to bracelets, necklaces, and a pair (or two) of custom earrings. Because 1.) I deserve and work hard. And 2.) Growth.

But the longer you collect jewelry, the more meaningful each piece becomes. Jewelry prices have significantly increased over the last few years. Between rising production costs, raw materials, and tariffs (lord help us), jewelers have had to adjust their prices accordingly. Which means every pieces no carries a little more weight. Emotionally, yes and fiancially. Consider it an investment in sentiment.

According to my husband, Justin Boone, the unofficial architect of the stack. A good stack requires balance, shape, range, and personality. And honestly, he’s right. Although, I’d never admit that to his face. Ha!

Balance

As you build your stack, think about proportion. No matter the size of your hand, there should be movement from your smallest to largest ring. Even the negative space should feel intentional vs forgotten.

Shape

Not all shapes are created equal. Some just work better together and some don’t. Part of the fun is discovering what works for you vs what doesn’t. If the shape doesn’t constantly capture your attention while you’re talking and waving your hand simultaneously, you don’t need them.

Range

This applies to both metal and price. Mixing metals adds dimensions, it gives the stack an edge and personality. And I’m a firm believer in a high/low moment. The most interesting stacks rarely come from a single place, they range from brand to brand. From $350 USD to $50 USD to $5K USD. Range is range!

Personality

This is self explanatory. The rings should feel like you. And more importantly, they should go with everything in you closet. The marriage between jewelry tray and closet is very (very) important.

But what’s the real answer to her question? Working in Fashion and Being a Mom? What’s it like? It’s hard. The hardest sh*t I’ve ever done. Harder than opening a retail boutique in the center of Manhattan. That was cake. This? Whew. Even if your kids are the two cutest kids on the planet, which mine are — it’s still hard. For example, as I’m typing this right now and my daughter is playing in the laundry piles I just separated. And my son is taking a nap — aka, playing on his iPad and pretending to snore.

Everyday comes with it’s new set of questions. It’s own set of obstacles. It’s own set of mental gymnastics. Are they playing on the iPad too much? Even if it’s an educational puzzle game — what about his little eyes? Why does my little mini constantly steal my phone? Does she know I’m a chronic TikTok scroller! Are they having fun? Are they happy? Should I cancel this meeting and take them to the park? Am I rushing them to nap just to meet a deadline? Should I show their face on the internet? Will they like the nanny more than me? What lessons am I teaching them by working sun up to sundown? When do I take a break? And in fashion, to play the game you need to be seen. And sometimes as a Mom you don’t want to be seen. You want to hide, cuddle, and eat Chipotle.

So what do you do? What you have to. You have to make balance because it can’t be found. You answer fashion-forward emails in the middle of a diarrhea meltdown. You block out time on your calendar for the aquarium and take a call on the way. You make it work. You silence the mental gymnastics with prayers and jump to the into the next thing. You use the kid (or kids!) as tools for inspiration and brainstorm while they play or work while they sleep. And if that doesn’t work then — develop eyes in the back of your head.

So if you’re reading and you’re the girl from Instagram, the real answer — I don’t know. I’m just out here raising God-fearing cuties with my fine ass husband, taking calls in-between naps, having Bible study every morning (or at least trying!), and picking poop out of my stiletto nails. Yuck! Ha!

I’ve purchased an unreasonable number of bags on The RealReal without technically spending money. If that sounds like denial, cool but it’s also strategy.

This is what happens when you stop panic buying and start treating luxury like a system. I sell first. I wait. I let my worst past purchases fund next ones. Store credit (that only hit’s on the 15th) forces restraint, focus, and just enough delusion to believe you’re being responsible.

The RealReal doesn’t reward urgency. It rewards patience and obsession. Refreshing the page isn’t desperation, I think it’s research. Watching something sell out is not a loss, I think it’s clarity.

This is not a guide for people who buy things because they’re “on sale.” It’s for people who think about a bag all day long, while brushing their teeth, while standing in line for coffee wondering if they already own something that does the same job. The right piece doesn’t shout—it lingers. It reenters your brain at inconvenient moments. It makes you reconsider outfits you already own and ones you haven’t worn in years.

Below are the rules I follow to shop The RealReal without regret, debt, or unnecessary emotional labor. Call it delusional discipline. Call it taste. Call it a very New York way of making fashion-forward decisions feel productive.

Sell first. Buy second. Let your past mistakes fund your future purchases. Cash is fine, but credit keeps you honest and a little feral.

If it’s meant for you, it will circle back. Usually at 30% off. Refreshing the page is not desperate, it’s devotion.

3. Obsession Is the Only Green Light
If you don’t ache for it, close the tab. The best pieces haunt you quietly, then loudly, then daily.

4. Condition Is Character (Choose Wisely)

5. Everyday or Never

As many of you know, I once owned a brick-and-mortar—yes, an actual concept store in Meatpacking, back when that still meant something.

T.A. New York focused on emerging designers and directional fashion carrying: Christopher Esber, Ottolinger, Julia Heuer, Rosie Assoulin, Christopher John Rogers, Masha Popova, A. Roege Hove, Collina Strada, Anne Isabella, Jonathan Simkhai, R13, Aisling Camps, among others.

We grew 30% year over year, until we didn’t (context matters, and we’ll get there). Our digital presence was ahead of its time, and Vogue named us one of the best fashion boutiques in the country. A meaningful distinction, then and now.

If I still had that perfect little concept store in Meatpacking (which I do miss), this is the direction I’d take now. Not because the industry hasn’t changed, but because my point of view has sharpened. The edit would be tighter. The floor would be calmer. The intention is clearer.

Wrap me in these handmade knits and let time do the rest. Yes, they’re expensive but these are pieces you keep for decades if you understand garment care and restraint. When I was younger, my mother, who is and without question, the smartest person I know. She taught me a very important phrase: cost per wear.
It’s the math you do to make expensive things feel responsible. You take the price, divide it by how often you’ll actually wear it, and wait for the number to become emotionally soothing.

Cost per wear is the difference between a $1,200 bag you grab every week without thinking and a $150 top that’s still sitting in your closet, tags on, judging you silently. One is an investment. The other is not.

And if there’s one thing in my closet that has never been forgotten, it’s my Givenchy platform ankle boots.

An impulsive and obsessive purchase made sometime around 2021 or 2022, I genuinely can’t remember, which supports the argument. These boots are still worn and loved in 2026. They are older than my two kids, my marriage, and my current fixation on The Row. They’ve been to Paris, Milan, LA, New York, Chicago, Miami, Montana (this is a story for another time), and everywhere in between. At this point, I’m almost certain I built my entire closet around them.

It’s safe to say their cost per wear has not just paid off but it has expired. The math no longer applies. These boots owe me nothing. I owe them.

So now what?

Some people would say, “they’re cooked.” Others would call them vintage. Once you’ve worn something 300+ times, do you retire it gently? Tuck it away in a box and take it out occasionally like a photo album? Let it remind you of stumbling over Paris cobblestone at 2 a.m. in a questionable outfit choice?

Or do you keep wearing them until the zipper gives up? Until the leather cracks? Until they break your heart in public?

Is there a respectful way to preserve a shoe that’s lived a full life? A Ziploc? A shelf? A small ceremony?

I guess what I’m really asking is: what is the end goal of cost per wear?
Do clothes ever actually finish their job—or do they just age with us?

My favorite black v-neck sweater has been stress-tested. I’ve owned it for almost two years, and somewhere along the way it became the standard by which all other sweaters are judged and usually fail.

First: the feel. The cashmere is soft in a fresh-out-of-the-dryer sheets way. Comforting. Trustworthy. The kind of softness that briefly improves your mood.

Second: durability. I accidentally put it in the dryer (I know). A cardinal sin. And yet, it survived. The shape held. No shrinking, no stretching, no passive-aggressive pilling. It came out like nothing happened, which felt both miraculous and slightly threatening.

The cut is where it really shows off. The shrunken v-neck hits exactly where it should with the perfect high-waisted Levi’s 501s, layered over a long or short dress, and structured enough to still show shape. It also leaves room for a crisp white t-shirt underneath, which feels important to mention.

And then there’s the black. An underrated category. This is the rare shade that gets along with every other black in my closet. No undertone tension. No visual arguments. Just harmony.

At this point, it’s less a sweater and more a reference point.

J. Crew Cashmere High V Neck Sweater
